The year 1997 is very significant for freedom-loving people everywhere particularly people frm the Indian subcontinent. In 1947, India (Bharat) officially gaind independence from the British colonial power. August 15 th. 1997 marks the fiftieth anniversary of independence of India.

People of Indian descent have gone to many- parts of the world and have made major contributions to their adopted countries. We as people have a lot more to contribute to the world as we move towards the 21 st. century. In order to do that we need to know ourselves. our heritage, our roots; and our rich culture's values and ideals. Therefore, we need to look at our past and know the events and ideals that shaped us into the way we are today

Through Freedom Festival 1997, we will learn about India's history. culture. contributions and people.  This festival is as much a celebration of the independence of India as it is a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of many great leaders and millions of people that eventually led to freedom.

FREEDOM FESTIVAL 1997 is a series of programs and activities to be held throughout North America for over one year to commemorate this momentous  Anniversary The main focus of activities is the college campuses and high-schools.
